Washoe Tribe says housing will harm important sites

A housing development that the Washoe Tribe says will destroy cultural and environmental resources was approved on Thursday.

The Douglas County, Nevada, commissioners voted 4-1 for the 384-home gated community over the objections of the tribe and neighboring landowners. The tribe owns 157 acres that will be surrounded by the new development and 229 acres downstream from the site.

The tribe will take action to prevent the community from moving forward, a tribal attorney said. The tribe wants to ensure Clear Creek is protected.
