Western Shoshone payout bill delayed in House

A controversial bill to distribute $143 million to members of the Western Shoshone Nation has been delayed in the House.

The bill was set for a floor vote this week but was pulled due to concern over tax provisions. The measure would exempt tribal members who receive a $30,000 per capita from paying taxes on it.

Western Shoshone activists oppose the bill, saying they never lost title to 26 million acres of land in what is now Nevada. Some tribal leaders want land to be a component of a potential settlement.

Western Shoshone tribes are located in Nevada, California, Utah and Idaho.
