Chairman of Montana tribe locked out of office

The chairman of the Fort Peck Tribes of Montana was removed from office on Monday but he vowed to continue as leader.

Chairman John Morales has been battling with the tribal council since his election last October. He refused to sign an agreement for an oil pipeline, fired three employees and sought to bring in a new law firm.

The council voted to remove Morales yesterday but he and his supporters refused to leave tribal chambers. According to The Great Falls Tribune, the council then tried to remove tribal members, including several elderly people. An ambulance had to be called for one woman.

The council then voted to lock Morales out of office.
