The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians of Michigan is finalizing a wide-ranging tax agreement with the state.
Under the deal, tribal members will receive exemptions from state income taxes, state sales and use taxes, single business taxes, and gas and cigarette taxes. In exchange, the tribe will share tax revenues with the state.
About 1,800 of the tribe's 3,900 enrolled members are considered eligible for the tax arrangement. They will be able to avoid taxes on items such as cars, boats and manufactured homes.
The state signed similar agreements with other Michigan tribes.
