Dozens of government employees have obtained bogus academic degrees or enrolled in unaccredited schools, the General Accounting Office said on Tuesday.
In testimony before the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee, the GAO said 463 employees have engaged in the "diploma mill" practice. Some had their tuition paid for by taxpayers.
The worst offender was the Department of Defense. At the Department of Interior, at least six employees were identified.
Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), committee chairwoman, said the report was "just the tip of the iceberg," according to The Washington Post. The GAO said there is more evidence they haven't uncovered.
