"Ben Nighthorse Campbell has confirmed the existence of a federal criminal investigation of his office. His pending retirement as Colorado's senior U.S. senator doesn't make him less of a public figure or diminish public interest in whether he or his staff may have violated the law.

The key question is whether Campbell himself was responsible for any wrongdoing, or if alleged culpability rests with his longtime chief of staff, Ginnie Kontnik.

Campbell says Kontnik took certain actions without his approval, but Kontnik's lawyers say Campbell is making her a scapegoat. It's impossible to know who is right at this time because information made public so far has been incomplete.

Voters didn't elect Kontnik, they elected Campbell, so expect him, as an official who helps write the nation's laws, to also uphold them."
