A disproportionate number of Alaska Native students in Alaska risk losing their high school diploma based on the latest results from the state's exit exam.
Of the seniors who failed the reading portion of the exam, 54 percent were Native. Of those who failed the writing portion, 43 percent were Native. About 42 percent of those failing the math portion were Native.
This year is the first year that public school seniors must pass the High School Graduation Qualifying Exam. The exact number of Native students who will not get their diplomas won't be known until the fall.
