Tribal official defends closure of California charter school

The administrator for the Guidiville Band of Pomo Indians said the tribe was forced to close a charter school in Ukiah, California, after being denied access to the facility.

Walter Gray sits on the board of directors for the Black Oak Charter School. He said the school's board of trustees, a separate entity, removed him and other tribal members from the trustee board.

Gray also said the remaining trustees denied the tribe access to the school, which contains equipment the tribe purchased. He said he had no other choice but to shut down the school due to concerns about the tribe's rights.

The 34 students enrolled at the school have been moved to another location.
