House committee hears bill to return land to tribe

The House Resources Committee took testimony on Wednesday on a bill to return 16,000 acres to the Colorado River Indian Tribes.

The land, on the California-Arizona border, was apparently removed from the reservation in the early 1900s. The tribe says the parcel has cultural and historical significance but that no gaming will take place there.

Some county officials in Arizona oppose the bill but didn't testify. A Bureau of Indian Affairs aide said the Bush administration supports return of the land but suggested technical changes.
