Indian lawmaker in S.D. cited for eagle feather in car

An Indian lawmaker who is trying to revise South Dakota's "dangling object" law paid a $20 fine for having an eagle feather in his vehicle.

State Rep. Tom Van Norman said he argued with a police officer over the feather, which was hanging from the rearview mirror. He refused to take it down, citing religious and philosophical reasons.

Indian drivers say the law is discriminatory. Van Norman is seeking to amend the law by making a dangling object a secondary offense, which means police can issue a citation only if a driver had been stopped for another reason.
