N.M. tribes and schools focus on student retention

Eight tribes in New Mexico and one in Texas have signed agreements with New Mexico State University to improve graduation rates of Indian students.

About 3 percent of NMSU students are Indian. About 30 percent of them quit in their freshman year.

To reverse the trend, the tribes seek to improve services and support for Indian students who travel far from home to attend NMSU, which is near the Texas border. In the works is an Indian student center.
