BIA to lose 30 percent of police force in new budget

Indian Country law enforcement will be reduced by 30 percent under the Bush administration's latest budget.

According to BIA law enforcement director Robert Ecoffey, 759 police positions will be lost by 2006. That's when money from the Community Oriented Policing Services runs dry.

COPS is funded through the Department of Justice. The Bush administration has cut the Indian component by $57 million for this fiscal year, resulting in the loss of 383 positions. The other cuts will come in 2005 and 2006.
