The Indian Community School of Milwaukee is planning to lay off 40 staff members, about a quarter of its staff.
The school won't lose $27 million of annual funding from the Forest County Potawatomi Tribe until 2011. But officials say they won't be able to keep up its operating costs of about $11 million once the funding ends.
The school had a reserve of about $125 million at the end of 2002.
