Opponents of federal recognition for the Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut don't want to speed up the already lengthy appeal process.
The state, three towns and another group that claims Indian ancestry have challenged the tribe's pending federal status. The case is before the Department of the Interior Board of Indian Appeals.
The tribe has already waited 25 years for an answer so lawyers asked the IBIA to expedite the review. The request is being opposed by two towns and the Wiquapaug Eastern Pequot group.
