S.D. students call for changes to Indian statue

The city council in Rapid City, South Dakota, took no action on three students' suggestion to remove or change a statue of a bound Indian warrior.

Michael Lieberman, 14, Yvonne Bear Stops, 17, and James Skinner, 17, said they consider "He Is They Are" offensive to Native culture. They said it portrays Indians in a negative light.

Victor Standing Soldier, an Indian resident of Sioux City, disagreed. He told the council to leave the statue where it is. Council member said they might not be able to do anything about it anyway.

The statue was created by Glenna Goodacre, who created the image of Sacagawea and her son that was used on the dollar coin.
