Government blamed for Native tuberculosis outbreak

Leaders of the York Factory First Nation in northern Manitoba are blaming government officials for an extremely high rate of tuberculosis on the remote reserve.

In the past three years, more than 100 out of 420 residents of the reserve have been infected with the respiratory illness, says Chief Roy Beard. He says the government isn't doing enough to test people living there.

The government says the outbreak is under control and that no new cases have occurred since the summer. Since the community is so small, the disease spreads quickly, experts say.
