Members of the Western Shoshone Nation are opposing the Bureau of Land Management�s decision to approve an exploration project for a gold mine in northern Nevada.

The Western Shoshone Defense Project, the Te-Moak Tribe and the Great Basin Mine Watch filed a petition against the project. They say the Horse Canyon area, where the Cortez Gold Mines is located, is an important cultural and religious site.

BLM is allowing Cortez Gold Mines to explore on 200 acres of public land. The mine already impacts 50 acres.
