The omnibus appropriations act on its way to President Bush includes an additional $4 million for tribal bison contracts.
Using the money, the Agriculture Department purchases meat from tribal providers. The Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations program then distributes the meat to low-income households, including the elderly.
Since 1998, Congress has set aside $25 million for tribal and independent bison meat providers.
