The Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota has created a new emergency dispatch center in hopes of reducing police response times on a reservation the size of Rhode Island.
A year ago, only 75 percent of the reservation could be reached by radio. By the end of this year, the tribe hopes to have the entire reservation 911-ready.
The $2 million system is the result of an effort to consolidate dispatch services. The tribe had to work with five telephone companies, including two wireless, to create the service.
