A Maliseet Indian woman who was adopted at a young age is a contestant on the popular CBS television show "Survivor."
Julie Berry, 23, was born in Maine and still lives there. Adopted at age 4, her parents described her as tomboy who played sports in high school.
She attended from East Carolina University in North Carolina, where she participated in the East Carolina Native American Organization. She graduated with a degree in family and community development and works with at-risk youth. She plans to obtain her master's in counseling.
Berry has one biological sister with whom she recently reunited. She has an adoptive brother.
On the show, Berry is a member of the female Yasur Tribe who has survived 12 episodes. She is one of five final contestants whose fates will be revealed in the season finale on December 12. She could win a $1 million prize.
The Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians is based in Maine. The tribe was recognized by an act of Congress in 1980 as the result of a land claim dispute.
