Bill could help settle water rights in North Dakota

The Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians is promoting a bill that could help settle water rights of tribes in North Dakota.

The bill is still being drafted but would give the state Water Commission the authority to negotiate water rights with tribes. The Turtle Mountain Band has passed a resolution in support.

The Water Commission's top engineer said the state could adopt a framework like Montana's, where tribes have settled water claims.
