Archaeologists in South Carolina say they have uncovered evidence that shows humans lived in North America at least 50,000 years ago, much earlier than the date accepted by other archaeologists.
Dr. Albert C. Goodyear and his team found artifacts they say are stone tools. The items were found in sediment dating back 50,000 years.
Other archaeologists greeted the claim with skepticism. They believe humans didn't arrive until about 13,000 years ago, citing projectile points found across the U.S.
