Colorado voters on Tuesday elected Democrat Ken Salazar, the state's attorney general, to the U.S. Senate seat vacated by the retiring Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R).

With 50 percent of the vote, Salazar becomes the first Hispanic elected to the Senate in 30 years. He defeated Pete Coors of the Coors beer company in the most expensive race in state history. Salazar ran as a moderate in a state dominated by Republicans.

Campbell, a member of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe of Montana, is leaving in January after 22 years of public service.
