Center to improve education of Indian students

The National American Indian, Alaskan & Hawaiian Educational Development Center opened in Sheridan, Wyoming, on Wednesday with the goal of improving educational levels of Native children throughout the country.

The center will provide a national network to train and recruit teachers who will help Indian students improve reading and writing skills. The center is developing a curriculum and teacher-training program.

Pilot programs based on the center's philosophy are showing some success. Literacy rates for students on the Northern Cheyenne and Crow reservations in Montana and on the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming have improved.

Several universities are lending their services to the effort. Sens. Mike Enzi (R-Wyoming) and Max Baucus (D-Montana) secured federal funds for the center.
