Apache tribe continues to fight telescope site

The San Carlos Apache Tribe of Arizona says it will continue to fight a telescope observatory being built on sacred Mount Graham.

The mountain is a central part of Apache life and religion. The tribe says the presence of the observatory desecrates the site.

The observatory is still under construction but was dedicated last week. The University of Arizona is the lead institution on the project and has leased time to other universities. Some have pulled out due to tribal objections.

The site is on federal land but lawsuits aimed at stopping the project have failed. A Congressional rider exempts construction from certain environmental laws.
