Arizona tribes oppose namking peak for Goldwater

A peak will be named in honor of former U.S. senator Barry Goldwater over the objections of Arizona tribes.

The state Board on Geographic and Historic Names voted in favor of Goldwater peak, the highest point in the White Tank Mountains. Only one member, Alyce Sadonge, who is Kiowa/Tohono O'odham, voted against it.

The Tohono O'odham Nation, the Gila River Indian Community and the Ak-Chin Indian Community suggested the peak be named Cheson Coo-gahtch, which means Desert Bighorn Peak in the O'odham language. The tribes have a connection to the peak, which was used to hunt bighorn sheep.
