The Bush administration last week rescinded regulations aimed at protecting endangered or threatened species on federal forest land.
The U.S. Forest Service is now allowed to approve road-building, logging or other proposals without conducting a population count of species. Instead, they can base decisions on the "best available science."
Critics said the change, which is not subject to public comment and goes into effect immediately, will harm species and speed up development.
