California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed a bill that would have treated tribes on the same footing as other governments when it comes to tax-free bonds.

Schwarzenegger called the bill "premature" and said other impacts, such as environmental, need to be considered.

California tribes have worked with local governments to issue tax-free bonds for casino and other projects. The bill had the backing of the Cabazon Band of Mission Indians and other tribal leaders.
