The Blackfeet Nation and the Montana Highway Patrol signed a new law enforcement agreement covering traffic laws on the reservation.

The tribe met with state officials last Friday to discuss the agreement. One person objected because public hearings had not been held as previously announced and one council member was worried about the impact on sovereignty.

Under the agreement, the Montana Highway Patrol will be able to issue tickets to tribal members for violations of tribal traffic laws. The tribal members will appear in tribal court.
