The Fond du Lac Band of Ojibwe's new gas station has prompted a price war and some complaints of unfairness in Minnesota.
The tribe pays the state's 20-cent-per-gallon excise tax but says it is exempt from the state's retail tax. That allows the station to offer gas at lower prices than nearby businesses, which have since dropped their prices in response.
The state Department of Commerce has received complaints but won't say if an investigation is underway. The Minnesota Petroleum Marketers Association also received calls.
Consumers are happy with the low prices. The tribe is the largest employer in the area and runs two casinos.
