The American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota is taking on more Indian issues such as racial profiling and the justice system as it expands its reach to the reservation.

In its biggest single project, the ACLU is spending $190,000 on a new office near the White Earth, Red Lake and Leech Lake reservations. The office's two-year plan will focus on education, particularly in law enforcement.

Local Indian leaders say the attention is welcome. They say the Indians are over-represented in the criminal justice system. They say Indians are singled out by police officers.

Minnesota is a Public Law 280 state.
