The state of New Mexico has found evidence of the 1680 Pueblo Revolt in the capital of Santa Fe.

During the revolt, Spanish colonists took refuge in Santa Fe. After some battles, their water supply was cut off by Pueblo Indians. The Spanish eventually fled New Mexico.

Archaeologists discovered the ditch that was used to divert the water from what is now downtown Santa Fe. Later, the Spanish used the same technique against the Pueblos after returning to New Mexico in 1693.

One of the leaders of the Pueblo Revolt was a man from San Juan Pueblo named Pope. The state of New Mexico will install a bronze statue of Pope in the National Statuary Hall in Washington, D.C.
