"In the Northwest, totem poles have always expressed the people's spirit. As the tragic Sept. 11 anniversary approaches, totems are on their way across the country to express America's spirit.
It is the third time that the Lummi Nation has put its heart, tradition and skills into helping America heal from the terrorist attacks of three years ago. The new work, called the Liberty and Freedom Poles, will complete a remarkable, inspiring series of totems dedicated to the 9/11 victims.
The Lummi Nation sent the first work, the Healing Pole, to a state park near New York City in 2002. A year ago, the Honoring Pole was taken to Shanksville, Pa., where United Flight 93 crashed as passengers fought the hijackers."
