Direct Service Tribes discuss health care needs

The Direct Service Tribes are meeting with the Indian Health Service this week in South Dakota.

The two-day meeting is attended by representatives of tribes with treaty-based health care rights. They discussed health care issues with IHS officials from nine of the agency's 12 regions.

Stacey Ecoffey, a specialist with the IHS, said direct service tribes are a priority for Dr. Charles Grim, the director of the IHS. She said Grim has included direct service tribes on his workgroups.

The meeting has been taking place in Rapid City and will include a visit today to the Pine Ridge Reservation.
