Man running marathon in honor of Lakota people

A South Dakota lawyer says his work on behalf of Lakota people on the Rosebud and Pine Ridge reservations prompted him to enter a marathon.

Greg Erlandson will participate in the 29th Annual Marine Corps Marathon on October 31 in Washington, D.C. Mills, a Lakota tribal member who won the gold medal in the 10,000-meter race at the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo, will speak at the race's re-race pasta party.

Erlandson, a former Marine, hopes his run will raise awareness for Running Strong for American Indian Youth, an organization created by Mills, also a former Marine, to help young Natives and improve the quality of life on reservations.
