City to consider school plan on tribal burial ground

A leader of the Juaneo Band of Mission Indians of California says a lawsuit is possible over a Catholic school's plans to build athletic fields and a performing arts center on tribal burial grounds.

Some members of the unrecognized tribe, also known as the Acjachemen Nation, have been fighting development of the 29-acre site in San Juan Capistrano. Rebecca Robles said construction, if approved, will destroy the grounds. But David Belardes, the leader of another faction, has been working with the school to remove and rebury tribal ancestors elsewhere.

The San Juan Capistrano City Council will hold a public hearing tomorrow night on the Junipero Serra High School's proposal.
