Scholastic Inc., the children's publishing company, and Kids in Distressed Situations Inc., a national charity, are donating 100,000 books to schools throughout Indian Country.
Schools in South Dakota will receive 20,000 books. Sen. Tim Johnson (D-South Dakota), whose wife helped to start the Scholastic-KIDS partnership, attended a ceremony on the Pine Ridge Reservation yesterday.
Scholastic says the book donation will improve reading skills among Indian students.
