Special Trustee Ross Swimmer urged tribes to go to Congress to reform the Indian trust.
Swimmer spoke at a listening conference sponsored by the Intertribal Monitoring Association. According to The Green Bay Press-Gazette, he said current system is "broken."
"We are still dealing with laws passed decades ago that dont really have any meaning," he was quoted as saying.
Swimmer said the "to-be" model of trust is not yet complete. When it's done, it will take several years to implement, he said.
ITMA's final listening conference will take place August 30-31 in Arizona.
