As she seeks re-election, Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) is finding it hard to avoid the fact that the only reason she is serving in the Senate is because of her father.
Frank Murkowski appointed his daughter to his position when he was elected governor of Alaska. About 90 percent of Alaskans said they disagree with this move when asked at the beginning of the campaign.
One of those is Roswell Schaeffer Sr., the Alaska Native mayor of the Northwest Arctic Borough. On a recent tour with Lisa Murkowski to a Native village, he said the way she was appointed will sway voters in her race against former governor Tony Knowles (D).
Murkowski sits on the Indian Affairs Committee and attends hearings frequently, usually when an Alaska Native leader testifies.
