James Lloyd Williams, the grand chief sachem of the Eastern Pequots of Connecticut, died on Saturday. He was 85.
Williams, also known as Silver Star, is credited with unifying the tribe, which had been divided into two factions. The groups won federal recognition as one tribe in 2002.
Williams made his last public appearance at the Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation's 2004 Powwow last month. Due to his failing health, he was unable to take part in the grand entry.
