Five tribes and tribal organizations have received $1.7 million in federal grants to develop mentoring programs for children of prisoners.
The money was awarded by the Department of Health and Human Services. The department says children of inmates are likely to become involved in crime.
The tribal grantees were:
Blackfeet Nation of Montana - $354,000
Navajo Nation - $740,000
Dry Creek Rancheria of Pomo Indians of California - $34,000
Wakanyeja Pawicayapi of South Dakota - $500,000
Menominee Nation of Wisconsin - $61,000
