Three Connecticut towns that are fighting tribes on federal recognition and land-into-trust want to join an Indian taxation case.
The towns of Ledyard, Preston and North Stonington want permission to file a brief in the case of Jo-Ann Dark Eyes, a member of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation. Dark Eyes is claiming she is exempt from paying state taxes on income she earned as a tribal official from 1996 to 1998.
Dark Eyes was living within the tribe's settlement lands during the time in question. But since the land was not placed in trust until after 1988, the state claims she is liable for taxes on $3.6 million in income.
The tribe has joined the case in support of Dark Eyes.
