Members of the Metis Nation of Ontario will be able to hunt and fish freely under a deal signed with the provincial government.
The government will recognize the Metis Nation's right to regulate its own hunting and fishing. Metis will be able to use their own "harvester certificates" but will not be allowed to sell any game.
The deal comes after Canada's Supreme Court last September ruled that Metis have constitutionally-protected rights as Native people. The court encouraged the province to enter into cooperative arrangements with the Metis Nation.
