A former Indian Health Service employee who was often described as outstanding is suspected of stealing money meant for repair and construction of new clinics.

Barney Ahgoon resigned as director of IHS' business office in Phoenix, Arizona, shortly after internal investigators began their review of the program. He was responsible for overseeing up to $100 million in reimbursement payments IHS receives from Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance companies.

The Department of Health and Human Services could turn the matter over to federal prosecutors.
