Indian Affairs Committee meeting, hearing

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee will hold a business meeting and hearing today on high-profile issues.

The meeting will consider the S.J.Res.37, a resolution to apologize for Native peoples on behalf of the United States., and S.1996, the Oglala Sioux Tribe Angostura Irrigation Project Rehabilitation and Development Act. The apology resolution has generated concern in recent weeks as it moves toward approval. The Oglala Sioux Tribe bill is non-controversial.

However, S.1529, the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act Amendments, has been pulled from consideration. The bill would make it harder to justify revenue-sharing in gaming compacts.

Following the meeting, the committee will hold an oversight hearing on tribal detention facilities. The witness list, which includes assistant secretary Dave Anderson, can be found at http://indian.senate.gov/2004hrgs/062304hrg/062304wit_list.htm.

A live video feed should be available at http://indian.senate.gov. The proceedings start at 10 a.m.
