Changing river threatens future of Hoh Reservation

The constant threat of flooding has forced the Hoh Tribe of Washington to consider looking for a new reservation.

In the past decade alone, the Hoh River has consumed about 10 percent of the 443-acre reservation. The growing tribe, which has 167 members, more than half under the age of 20, has nowhere to build.

The tribe has met with the Bureau of Indian Affairs and other federal agencies to seek relocation. The BIA has requested a grant of $200,000 to study the possibility.

The tribe's existing reservation was created by executive order in 1963.
