Lawsuit seeks benefits for North Carolina Indians

A North Carolina Indian man is suing the state and federal governments for failing to provide benefits to Indian descendants with federal benefits.

Roy Maynor is asking for $500 million for the federal governments failure to abide by a 1975 court decision involving his father. He says the Department of Interior has not provided land, housing and other assistance owed to descendants of 22 Siouan Indians identified in the 1930s.

Maynor's father, Lawrence Maynor, was one of the 22 people certified as Indian. The group asked for a reservation but were denied by Interior. Mayor says some of the descendants have received help with housing but nothing else.
