Leaders of the Crow Tribe of Montana signed a bill on Tuesday aimed at increasing homeownership rates.
The bill allows tribal members to obtain private financing for homes. The tribe will provide security for the loans by issuing leases to tribal members.
Relying on federal funds, only five homes are built a year on average. This summer, 100 new homes will start construction.
The bill also makes it easier for tribal members to obtain private financing to start businesses.
