Quapaw Tribe objects to county law enforcement

The Quapaw Tribe of Oklahoma has ordered county law enforcement not to come onto tribal land without permission.

The dispute stems from recent incidents in which Ottawa County deputies went to the tribe's casino. The first time, an armed deputy came looking for a burglary suspect. The second time, an armed deputy was told to relinquish his weapon if he wanted to enter the building to talk to a Bureau of Indian Affairs investigator about an ongoing case.

County officials then say the vice-chairman of the tribe's business committee threatened legal action after the incidents took place. The county has since told its deputies not to go onto tribal land unless they are in hot pursuit of a suspect.

The tribe relies on the BIA for law enforcement services.
