A terminally ill Indian man living on a Montana reservation claims his tribe will take away his grandchildren when he dies.
Roland Morris is a member of the Leech Lake Ojibwe Tribe. He and his non-Indian wife, Lisa, have custody over four grandchildren.
At a press conference in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, Roland and his daughter claimed the grandchildren will be taken away by the Leech Lake Tribe. They said the Indian Child Welfare Act would not allow the kids to stay with Lisa because she is white.
The Morrises belong to the Citizens Equal Rights Alliance/Foundation, an anti-Indian group opposed to tribal jurisdiction over non-Indians and non-member Indians. The group claims all federal Indian policies are wrong.
